Anderson Motor Speedway made the transition from dirt to asphalt in 1987. Over the last 22 years the track has seen many improvements, but the asphalt remained untouched and over time continued to wear. After long-time track owner, Rupert Porter passed away in November 2009, Shirley and Sylvia Porter were faced with the question of what to do with the Anderson Motor Speedway. There was no choice but to continue the tradition of Friday night racing at the 3/8 mile oval, but the track surface needed to be addressed.
In these uncertain times resurfacing the track seemed out of the question so when a fellow track promoter suggested a “revitalization effort” to include patching the cracks in the surface and then grinding the surface it seemed to make more sense. First, the endeavor was much more cost effective and it would also be a more “environmentally-friendly” effort to make use of what was still good asphalt and remove the areas in which erosion and time had taken its toll. Goss Construction of Kentucky mobilized on February 1st and throughout two snow falls, 14 days of rain combined with unseasonably cold temperatures in February managed to complete the patching process (over 170 tons of asphalt) and finishing the grinding process of the surface. Area drivers and fans have been anxiously awaiting the completion of this revitalization effort and this Saturday, March 27th AMS will hold open practice from 1 to 5 PM (gates will open at Noon). A second open practice will be held “under the lights” on Friday, April 2nd from 5 to 9PM. Tuesday night practices begin on Tuesday, April 6th (5-8PM).
Anderson Motor Speedway is excited to announce that Late Model Stock division will return to competition beginning with the 2010 SEASON OPENER on Friday, April 9th. Also competing on that evening will be: Mini Stocks, The Taking Phone Book Renegades, Racer’s Edge/Vickery Speed Shop Super Renegades, Legends and BM Modified divisions.
